How to play

  1. Choose Solve together or Team challenge. Team challenge supports 2–8 named teams and matches of 3 or 5 cases. One separate host knows the secrets and does not compete.
  2. Choose a case. Everyone looks away while the host reads the explanation, minimum solution, accepted variants and private question notes. Stop sharing to a TV first. Hide & investigate returns to the shared mystery.
  3. In Team challenge, the highlighted team asks one yes-or-no question. The host answers Yes, No, Irrelevant or We do not know, then presses Next team. All teams can use what they hear. Cooperative players ask freely.
  4. Example: A ghost shadow grows, but the decoration stays still. Ask: Is it a real ghost? No. Is it a shadow? Yes. Did the light move? Yes. Explain that a torch moved closer to the decoration, enlarging its shadow.
  5. On your turn, choose Our final theory and explain the case aloud. The host accepts a concrete, plausible explanation of all public facts and previous answers, even if it differs from the prepared solution. Hidden clues cannot invalidate it. A correct theory ends the case and earns 5 points minus the number of evidence cards opened, with a minimum of 2.
  6. Open evidence reveals up to three public clues, one at a time. Give up & reveal ends the case with no points if nobody can solve it. The answer unfolds in three steps; continue after the third.
  7. The team match ends after 3 or 5 cases, including unsolved ones. Highest total wins and ties share victory. Cooperative play has no scores or fixed match length. How to play contains a complete example dialogue.
  8. The host may ask one neutral clarification before judging. Unspecified facts are unknown, not invented. A well-aimed question can uncover a clue without a points deduction. Only the active team requests evidence; everyone agrees before abandoning a case. Detailed host guidance and example answers are inside each case.
  1. Choose cooperative play or 2–8 teams. Pass the phone privately to the host to read the secret, then tap Hide & investigate before showing the group.
  2. Ask questions and explain theories aloud. In team mode, take one question per turn and tap Next team afterwards. On your turn, Our final theory lets the host judge your explanation.
  3. Tap Open evidence for a clue. Each clue reduces the team reward by 1 point. Give up & reveal ends an unsolved case without points.
  4. Read the three-part reconstruction, then continue to the next case. Full rules and an example conversation are in How to play.

A little more about the game

Midnight Tales is a host-led Halloween mystery game for groups. Sixteen original fictional cases combine strange events with witness statements, plans and physical evidence. Each case has three clues, a private host guide with minimum requirements, accepted alternatives and example answers and a three-part reconstruction. Play cooperatively or compete with 2–8 teams across 3 or 5 cases. Teams take turns asking questions and proposing explanations; the host judges spoken answers. Clues lower the reward, and the highest score wins. No account, typing or timer is required. Match progress and revealed cases are saved in this browser when storage is available.
